Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi National Park
Begin your birding adventure in Nairobi National Park which offers diverse habitats and boasts over 500 recorded bird species. Explore its expansive savannahs, wetlands, seasonal dams, and acacia woodlands. Take your time listening for bird calls to guide your sightings. Alongside the rich birdlife, spot other iconic African wildlife such as giraffes, zebras, lions, and rhinos.
- Key birds: Secretary Bird, Kori Bustard, Verreaux's Eagle-Owl, Saddle-billed Stork, and Black-headed Oriole.
Day 2: Nairobi - Mount Kenya Forest
Drive to the lush Mount Kenya Forest, home to a rich diversity of montane bird species. Enjoy afternoon birding along forest trails and open glades. Marvel at the pristine ecosystem and keep an eye out for colorful turacos, sunbirds, and elusive forest birds.
- Key birds: Hartlaub's Turaco, Abyssinian Crimsonwing, Mountain Greenbul, and Scarlet-tufted Malachite Sunbird.
Day 3: Mount Kenya - Samburu National Reserve
Today, journey north to the semi-arid landscapes of Samburu National Reserve. En route, the scenery transitions from verdant highlands to the drier savannah of Kenya's northern region. In the afternoon enjoy your first birding drive along the Ewaso Ng'iro River, which attracts a variety of birds and wildlife. Samburu is renowned for its dryland species found nowhere else in Kenya.
- Key birds: Vulturine Guineafowl, Somali Ostrich, Golden-breasted Starling, and Pygmy Falcon.
Day 4: Samburu National Reserve
Spend a full day exploring Samburu's diverse habitats, including riverine forests, savannahs, and rocky outcrops. Morning and afternoon game drives will focus on spotting the region's unique birdlife and endemic species. You may also encounter Samburu's famous "Special Five" mammals: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk, and Beisa oryx.
- Key birds: White-headed Mousebird, Donaldson-Smith's Sparrow-Weaver, and Somali Courser.
Day 5: Samburu - Lake Nakuru National Park
After breakfast, depart Samburu and head south to Lake Nakuru National Park in the Great Rift Valley, known for its soda lake and abundant birdlife. Enjoy an afternoon birding drive as you explore the lake's shoreline for flamingos, pelicans, and waders, as well as the surrounding acacia woodland for forest species.
- Key birds: Lesser flamingo, African Fish Eagle, White-fronted Bee-eater, and Yellow-billed Stork.
Day 6: Lake Nakuru - Lake Naivasha
Spend the morning birding in Lake Nakuru before continuing to the freshwater Lake Naivasha. Known for its tranquil beauty, Lake Naivasha is surrounded by lush vegetation and offers excellent birdwatching opportunities. Enjoy an afternoon boat ride to observe waterbirds and visit Crescent Island for more birding.
- Key birds: African Jacana, Malachite Kingfisher, Giant Kingfisher, and African Fish Eagle.
Day 7: Lake Naivasha - Thika
After a morning of birding along the shores of Lake Naivasha, drive back to Thika. Along the way, you may stop at birding hotspots like Kieni Forest, depending on timing. Arrive in Thika in the afternoon where you can relax at your tented camp and explore the surrounding wooded area.
- Key birds: Rosy-throated Longclaw, Martial Eagle, and Yellow-throated Sandgrouse.
Day 8: Departure
Spend your final morning at leisure or enjoy one last birding excursion before your transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your departure flight. Depart Kenya with incredible memories of its birdlife and natural beauty.
